Movable Dune

Snapped this pic of a dune in Florence, Oregon last weekend. Upon Googling “dune” (as dictionary meanings sometimes inspire poems), I learned the author of the book “Dune” lived in Florence and was inspired by the dunes there. And, looks like the movie “Dune 2” based on his book came out this year.

When those kinds of stars align, there must be a poem…

Movable Dune

Dunes

the card tables of hills,

they move.

Creatures of the coastal winds

Hillock deserts

amongst the rugged bracken

and brackish estuaries.

No giant worms to worship here,

banana slugs are preferable.

Once, we tried to stop dunes from drifting

Planted deep rooted Scotch broom.

Its bonny yellow has invaded the land.

We have yet to outsmart Nature.

Dunes are vagabonds

they must flow

and we must adapt and allow.
