Mother Who Holds Us In

Just when you think you’ve emptied the well of Mother’s Day poems, another one comes. The title line comes from a poem I vaguely remember hearing in college. The rhythm and sound of it stuck with me. Rarely do I write rhyming poems but this title line called for it.

I was honored to read this poem on Mother Day for my mother and other mothers at my parent’s church. Happy Mother’s Day to everyone who is and had a loving Mother.

Mother Who Holds Us In

Mother who holds us in
the womb of earth.
Mother who holds us in
the moment of birth.
Mother who holds us in
love and forgiveness.
Mother who holds us in
growth and sickness.
Mother who holds us in
joy and hardship,
in prayer wherever we may trip.
Mother with whom we shared heart beats
holds us whenever we shall meet
this life and in heaven
holds us up without question.

Mother who holds us in,
thank you on Mother’s Day
and every day
for that which
we can never repay.
