Cats may well be the highest incarnation. When I struggle with the concept of “detachment,” it helps to think of cats. There is a wisdom in their eyes and in their ways. Maybe the word “objective” works better. “Detachment” has an aloof connotation. Cats may seem aloof, but they are very aware of and in-tune with their surroundings.
I added to the metaphor of the poem after, doing Yoga with Adriene’s “Deepen” video. The practice of deep hip stretches, deep breathes, and slowing down to allow time for Yoga reinforced the poem’s message.
Day 11 of National/Global Poetry Writing Month (AKA NaPoWriMo). Oracle card prompt from “Divine Abundance” deck by Tosha Silver and Fena Gonzalez. Enjoy the poem!
Deepening
Deepening
Youth is growing in breadth
Maturity is growing in depth
For is not wisdom
the really knowing of a thing?
and when we know
we can let go.
Patience deepens
Resilience deepens
Strength
Steadiness
Trust in self and therefore non-grasping
and therefore peace.
If cats are our metaphor
maturity is delight in a sunny spot.
Time slows for naps,
purrs, playing with string,
deep stretches, big yawns,
and the Zen of watching birds.
Deepening is savoring of life,
the realization that moments are precious,
that moments, the now,
is all that is real.
