Sentinel Cardinal

Being five poems behind in Global Poetry Writing month, spaces the poems. Of course if I would listen to the Cardinal and get up early to write, we’d be on track. This beautiful and sassy bird, needed this poem. Enjoy.

13 Sentinal Cardinal
Sentinel Cardinal

Sentinel Cardinal
in his pontifical vestment
Staccato song
No blending into surroundings
for this bold bird
He quietly kept company
all winter long
bursting into spring
with the lust of red.

Cardinal wakes me this morn
Daylight comes early now
and the redbird
will suffer no late sleepers
Rise to industry
high in your tree
for spring is short
as is youth
Shake off the weariness of the week
it is Saturday
Saturn’s day
when the first hours shall be ruled.
