Frost Clean Hope

For every minute of the new year three days in, we have been immersed in a beautiful frost fog, every surface bejeweled with hoarfrost. I thought this poem was going to be about natures glory and it ended up exploring more on the 2021 theme of freedom. Surely we are washed clean and new by nature. Enjoy the poem.

Frost Clean Hope
Frost Clean Hope

At the turn of the year,
with all hopeful,
nature donned its geometry of purity.
Trees in delicate tulle dressing gowns
awakening from dread,
frost jewels piped on spent Goldenrod
and blood-red sumac.
A frost bath making us new
and clean as birch smoke.

Hope suspended mist in the calm white sky,
blank sky our new beginning
a new book
a new page
a sigil
that when it lifts
when it melts into earth
we will be both grounded
and limitless in our newness.
Time more meaningful,
imagination bigger and brighter,
and love overtaking deserve.

We realize that freedom
is self-reliance
and that freedom is our hope
the attainable hope
our choice
our action
our new book.
And when we start,
freedom will spread
like snowflakes
that accumulate
into great moving glaciers
blue as endless sea,
blue as lifting frost fog.

  1. Camille Anderson says:

Lovely poem. Verifying: awakening from the Dread? new book new page new SIGIL? love overtaking DESERVE?

If any of these need correcting, please send new copy for forwarding to curling friends.

  2. Smile. Verified not typos. “Dread” relates to pandemic and anticipatory grief it created. “Deserve” references our “I deserve” entitlement culture that has been promoted by media and advertising. Love is always better. Sigil is a magic symbol, power of attraction, intention. Hope this helps. Thanks for asking for clarification. Of course, true interpretation is a partnership between reader and writer. It is a little different for each combination of reader/writer. -Dawn
