Merry Christmas to you and yours and to the little good things that come out of bad things like a global pandemic. Love and Joy, Dawn
COVID Christmas 2020
A new kind of Christmas.
We talk to Grandma on the phone
instead of squeezing onto her
flowered couch with cousins.
We get her stuffing recipe
that we used to take for granted.
She laughs,
not too busy serving.
We reminisce,
tell stories
and remember those
who have passed.
The ham is smaller,
the sides dishes healthier,
and the dessert more decadent.
Christmas cards are revived
and technology connects
our smiling faces.
Less travel,
more walks outside,
time to nap
and leave the dishes until tomorrow.
It’s still Christmas, Yule of old
celebrating the birth of Jesus,
the birth of the light at solstice.
We string lights for the neighbors
and order our gifts online
shopping snuggled on the couch
with a cup of peppermint tea.
It’s still Christmas, Yule of old.
Mass is streamed via podcast
and handshakes are emoticons
but it is still Christmas
when humanity loves and remembers
especially on a COVID Christmas
when we remember how precious
are life and loved ones.
