For the Love of a Cat Face

I love this poem and I love interesting trees. The loggers call them “cat faces.” You will see more of these cat faces in my poems.

For the Love of a Cat Face

Sure, there are plenty
of straight, proud trees
tall board feet
captains of the football team.
But, I love a cat face,
a character tree
with a puckered hollow,
a crocked smile
running cross grain,
a non-typical rack
standing out from the crowd
barnacled, burled,
twisted like switch backs
growing around obstacles
and injuries.
Gnarled, wise old trees.
I pat their cheeks and scaly bulges.
These are the true beauties of the woods.
