Baking Zen

Poetry writing month, theme of Self-Care, Self-Calm as part of the collective whole.

Today’s thrive while in quarantine poem is about baking. The poem contradicts itself if you are alone in COVID19 “safe in place,” although you still probably have a strong urge to share what you have baked. Rhnea is the inspiration for this poem. We agreed to bake together apart. She made gluten-free cupcakes, and I turned out oatmeal golden raisin cookies. Enjoy the poem and the Zen of baking.

Baking Zen

What is it about baking that gives comfort?
Is it the mixing of ingredients,
ingredients that on their own are lack luster
but put together make dough?
That marvelous thing called dough.
Whether it is cookies
or bread or gluten free cupcakes,
there is first the dough.

Maybe it is the aromas of baking
filling the house with the smell of comfort.
Maybe it is the warmth of the oven
with its dreamy effect.

There is the eating too
but I don’t think it is so much
about eating or tasting
as it is about treating others.
Baking is a kind of love,
an expression,
a celebration in yeast
and baking powder
to be shared.
