To Love a Place

Day 24 NaPoWriMo. Prepare to swoon. I asked my friend and web-developer Matt Koenig how he met his Indonesian wife of 18 years and what he loves about her country. He answered, “I truly believe in soulmates and when you meet the love of your life, whether in person or online, you feel it deep in your soul and will do crazy things to make sure you are together.”  About Indonesia he said, “I love everything from the smells, the feel of the warm tropical air, the sounds of the traffic, the red tile roofs, the amazing spicy food, the fresh fruits (even durian) and the gracious and kind people.” Sigh. Isn’t true love wonderful?! Enjoy the poem.

To Love a Place

Loving a place
is loving the people.
Their personalities
are the colors
of the landscape.
Their stories
bring out the flavors
of spicy food
and boisterousness
of the drink.
Their voices
are the sounds of place
the ocean waves
with giggling foam
rolling stones on the beach.
Their hospitality
is the tropical balm
the kiss of morning sun
and the comfort of cool waters.

To know a place
is to know its people
to laugh with them
to share
to learn
to thank them “Terima kasih.”

Matt is also a professional photographer. I love this photo of him and his family in Indonesia in 2012.
