Fin del Mundo

Day 6 NaPoWriMo. This is the story of a Keith and Jalene who rode their motorcycles from Oregon, USA to the southernmost tip of South America and back again. These stamps are from a postcard they sent to family at their turn around point Fin del Mundo (end of the World) Tierra Del Fuego, Argentina. I love how the stamps are layered over each other like the many countries they explored one after the other. Jalene Case now runs her dream company doing coaching & professional development. Enjoy the poem.

Fin del Mundo

Our parents droned away
at the same job
retired quietly
to morning coffee
with the paper
to read the obits.

We quit our jobs
hopped on our motorcycles
and rode away
to the end of the world
and the end of what
had been our small world.

Country after country
greeted us
taught us
through green valleys
equipment repairs
and colorful towns

We needed less
we tasted more
we experienced more
we loved more

After two years riding
our wanderlust slaked
our heads and hearts
filled with ideas
we parked our motorcycles
and began a new adventure
new perspectives
new careers
forever changed
by our midlife ride
to the end of the world.

  1. That first stanza reads so well, and says so much in so few words. Lovely poem.
