Winter Will Come

Here is another of the poems that came out of hikes with my sister in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon this fall. Wrote my Christmas poem already so stay tuned as we get closer to the holiday. Appreciate winter my dears.

Winter Will Come

A trial snow,
wet and slow,
fell in the mountains today.
A test,
a preview,
a hint
Winter will come again
as it does.
The lichen know
clinging to the trees
only above snow height.
Winter will come
Snow will cover the manzanita,
will bend the saplings,
and make deep wells
around the Ponderosa Pines
and Western Hemlock.
Winter will come
and bring the snow,
the snow whose melt
will sustain the land
through the dry summer.
It is the winter
that births the spring,
the repose that gives life.
