Thinking of Moms

Using postage stamps as prompts for Na/GloPoWriMo (poetry writing month) is a hoot. This is my second stamp collection NaPoWriMo so my mind is trained to start a poem a flowin’ whenever I lay and eye on one.

The poem that came flowin’ out for this wintry cardinal stamp was of my Mom and all that good moms give us. Enjoy the poem and thank your Mom be she in heaven or knitting a sweater by the fireplace.

Thank you Moms cardinal stamp
Thinking of Moms

Cardinals make me think of my Mom
her favorite bird
that Christmas red so brilliant
back-dropped by falling snow.

Here the male cardinal
is fluffed up
against the cold just as
mom prepares us
to face the cold,
to sit tall,
chirp and sing properly,
eat your veggies,
and believe in yourself.

This cardinal bears gifts.
Mom gifts us
with life,
unwavering love,
a soft place to land.

This cardinal bears berries of wisdom.
Mom too give us pearls
of life-earned wisdom,
of family wisdom passed down,
a grounding,
a history,
a working knowledge
to take with us when we fledge

oh, and that soft place to land
just in case the wind shifts
and blows us off our branch.

Thank you Moms!
