Poem #18 – Stamp collection – National/Global Poetry Writing Month 2017
What is strength?
Is it how much you can bench press?
Is it how much pain you can endure?
Is it never getting sick?
Is it how long you can resist chocolate cake?
Or is it holding the hand of your dying mother?
Is being strong your tensile strength, resilience?
Is it not having fear or plowing forward despite fear?
Is true strength the ability to thrive
that life-force pulsing hard?
Is it a sense of survival or learning from difficult experiences?
Is it finding the nuggets of joy every day, every day?
Is it innovation, calculated risk,
a spirit of giving?
Is it compassion
and courage to have the hard conversation?
Who do you admire
and what are their strengths?
What is strength to you?
