Imagine out of the box

Poem #12 – Stamp collection – National/Global Poetry Writing Month 2017

Imagine out of the box

What if Santa’s sleigh was pulled by invertebrates?
What if he rode up in an outrigger canoe
instead of a jingle-bell-dazzled sleigh
wearing boogie board shorts?

What if you worked part-time
in a small town
baking cinnamon bacon pecan rolls
with maple glaze?

What if you did a vision quest
to find your totem name?
Would you be a crane, a crab or a cobra?

What if you painted sunflowers
on your kitchen ceiling
in the winter
and invited friends over for Ethiopian sunflower seed juice
with a kick of white lightning?

What if you wrote your memoir
describing all the adventures, misadventures
and missed adventures
of your life?

What if you wrote your memoir
looking forward instead of backward?
Would you zip line in Costa Rica?
Would you use Grandma’s crystal goblets?
Would you bring breakfast in bed
to the love of your life every third Saturday?
