Smack down 2014

This weekend my 12 year old nephew, Tweeter, organized a Smack down sleep-over event at his house for his hockey buddies. Watching these boys and being in their big energy was quite an experience…so I wrote a poem about it.  BYW, this is the same kid I wrote about in the poem “The perfect child.” He has such good organizational and leadership skills.

Smack down 2014

Six pre-teen boys
and two more late to show
all voice and limbs
and hungry mouth
wielding foam battle axes
and broad swords and a mace.

When a fatal blow
splits your guts
you sit in the graveyard,
a mound of earth
on the hill
near the driveway,
until the next smack round.

Bonded by years of hockey,
Mites, Squirts, and Pee Wees,
the spring smack down
is cordial and encouraging
for an every-man-for-himself game.

The boys cheer
while devouring handfuls of chips
when the last two arrive.
With excited howls
and rising bravado
they shout over each other.

Now eight energy ganglions
of blooming testosterone
hit the battle field lawn
until Tweeter’s Mom announces
“the hot dogs
are off the grill.”
