Summit Sculptures

Frosted Summit
Mt. Bachelor

Summit sculptures
by the gnarled hands
of the winter warlock.

Crusted trees unrecognizable.
White coral against
a Crater Lake blue sky.

Like growing crystals
of frosted rock-candy.
Plumes of purest white
billow in stop-action.

Tempura on a branch
puffed and fried
to snow-crunch texture.

Mountain wine-diamonds
bleached white
by extremes.

The summit is bald,
scraped to a grainy mound
where the high winds|
run unabated
creating these other worldly sculptures
defying gravity
like flying flags frozen in time.

Tiny flecks of skiers
like fleas with egos
bounce down
the great body of mountain.

I watch, waiting for mountain
to shrug its white shoulders
and flick us off
in one gale puff

But mountain doesn’t.
Today is a day to stop and look,
look at the art of snow and wind
found only at elevation.

Today is not about the swish
and thrill of speed
but about stopping in awe
and thanking this wise planet
for wonder
for beauty
and the surprise of summit sculptures

Thank you earth,
Thank you nature
for my beautiful life!
