Ode to Odie the big bad Screech Owl

There’s a screech owl, named Odie, who spends his days in a tree hole right outside the condo in which I am staying.  Now screech owls don’t actually screech. They whinny like a horse. Use this link to play a screech owl twill and see a photo.

Odie is small in stature and big on owl ego. Here is his Ode…

Ode to Odie the big bad Screech Owl

“Odie Odie oh”
pint-sized owl with the big ‘tude.
You look so sweet all snuggled in your tree hole
inching out as darkness comes
warning in your horsey trill
that death will soon befall a fat mouse.

Your rufous feathered brow
over grumpy yellow eyes
looks at me, annoyed
then jerks away in a huff
as I sing “Odie Odie oh.”

When the gloaming is near complete
you don your favorite coat of night
and swoop out from your roost
on wide wings edged with silencer feathers.

Fly right my wise friend
and join me again in the backyard woods
when the daylight drives you home
singing “Odie Odie oh.”
