It was long ago
I was always far away
And you were always here
Being you
With your big feelings
And crude humor
And intelligence
And false strength
And your red and black cars

Hurt, I said goodbye one day
And meant it
And missed you
And told myself I deserved a better friend
When all the time
You were the deepest friend
I just couldn’t see past myself
Couldn’t see past your crust
To see you

And now I’ve come back
Grown up
With life’s good lessons
With better vision
And you’re still here
Being you
Welcoming me back
